LLU Students Explore Sustainable Birch Processing in Practice

On 12 December 2025, first-year students from the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Sciences at Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies visited our Cesvaine production facility to gain first-hand insight into the processing of birch sawlogs at one of the world’s most modern birch processing plants. The visit aimed to provide students with a practical understanding of how theoretical knowledge is applied in a contemporary and sustainable manufacturing environment.
During the visit, students were introduced to the wood measurement process, quality criteria, and requirements considered when sorting both birch logs and sawn timber. Special attention was also given to the everyday challenges of working with birch as a material and to how modern technologies help ensure the most efficient and responsible use of every cubic metre of wood.
Such cooperation with the university is essential for the development of the industry and the training of future specialists, while also strengthening understanding of sustainable forestry, responsible resource use, and the production of high-value-added wood products.
